Permit

The Ghost of the Flats: Nearshore Permit

The Permit is the “Holy Grail” of the flats. They are spooky, powerful, and incredibly frustrating to catch—which is exactly why they are so prized. While most people think of the Keys for Permit, we have a world-class Permit fishery right here on the West Coast, specifically around the wrecks and sandy flats near Punta Gorda.

The Sight-Fishing Challenge

  • The Sandy Flats: On calm, clear days, we hunt for “tails” or “shadows” on the white sand. Permit have incredible eyesight; if you see them, they’ve probably already seen you.

  • Nearshore Wrecks: Large schools of Permit often congregate over shallow-water wrecks just a few miles off the beach.

  • Stealth: This is where the polling platform is mandatory. I will push us silently into range. One loud noise or a bad cast, and the school is gone.

The Technical Setup

  • Fly Fishing: This is the ultimate test of a fly angler. We use 9-weight or 10-weight rods and heavy “crab” patterns. You have to lead the fish perfectly and let the fly settle on the bottom like a real crab.

  • Light Tackle: We use long, whippy spinning rods to make long-distance casts. The only way to consistently catch a Permit is with a live, frisky Pass Crab.

  • The Fight: Once hooked, a Permit will turn its flat, plate-like body sideways and use the current to its advantage. It’s a long, technical battle that requires a smooth drag and a lot of patience.
